Women tennis - A tribute to Argentina's players

Updated on December 12, 2016

Introduction

Argentina has had a rich crop of female tennis players, it has not only led South American tennis throughout the open era, but has been one of the world's best tennis playing nations. The male side of tennis in Argentina has born more top level tennis players than the female side, but nevertheless there are many achievement from Argentina's female players.

Gaby Sabatini

In the open era, there has been one single Grand Slam champion, in the form of the superstar if tennis in the 80s and 90s, Gabriela Sabatini. Gabriela peaked at 3 in the world ranking, she also won the 1990 US Open beating Steffi Graf in the final. In 1988, she lost to Steffi Graf in her first Grand Slam final at the US Open 1988. Finally, in 1991 she also lost to Steffi Graf at the 1991 Wimbledon final. Outside of Grand Slam finals, she won the Season Ending Championships twice. In 1988 she defeated Pam Shriver in straight sets and then in 1994 she beat Lindsay Davenport. She also won the 1988 Silver Medal at the Olympics and the 1988 Wimbledon Final with her rival, Steffi Graf. Through her career she had multiple wins over Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Pam Shriver, Jennifer Capriati and Jana Novotna. In my opinion, Gabriela would have to go down as Argentina's greatest, however, there are other who have achieved a lot.

Great Gabriela Sabatini Match

Paola Suarez

Paola Suarez achieved many things in her career. She broke into the top ten in singles towards the end of her career. She reached the semi final of the French Open in 2004, with a win over Maria Sharapova. Paola also reached the quarter finals in 2002, beating Amelie Mauresmo, and elsewhere was a Quarter finalist at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows. However, Paola's great success came in doubles, partnering Virginia Ruano-Pascual, she became number one in the world and won 8 Grand Slam Titles.

Ines Gorrochategui and more Top 20 players

Ines Gorrochategui also reached a career high of 19 in 1994. She was a very talented all court player, who was unfortunately plagued by various injuries. Ivonna Madruga also peaked in the top 20, during the eighties. Both of these Argentines made Grand Slam quarter finals in their career.

Finally, a player who has just retired, Gisela Dulko. She peaked at 26 in the world rankings, but had numerous wins over the top players. These wins included Victoria Azarenka, Samantha Stosur, Ai Sugiyama, Elena Dementieva, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and more. In doubles, she won the Australian Open doubles and was number one the world.

The loss of Gisela has left Argentina without at top 100 player for the first time in a long time. However, we hope that the new Argentine number one, Paula Ormaechea, will live up to her talent and join the list of great Argentinian woman players.

Gisela Dulko and the future
